The More Loving One
This beautiful piece by W.H. Auden truly defines the pains of one sided love while using stars as the metaphor.
Hello hello!
As we continue to talk about life, one important topic that I can barely skip over is LOVE! Of any kind. This beautiful piece by W.H. Auden truly defines the pains of one sided love while using stars as the metaphor.
Auden basically starts with saying how he recognizes that the stars “do not give a damn,” but that does not stop him from admiring them. He ends with the harsh truth that some day that star may just disappear from his life and he will have to slowly yet surely learn to get over this heartbreak. Haven’t we all been in a place where the person we really cared for and loved just doesn’t give a damn and we eventually have to deal with them not being around. Be it a friend, a bestfriend or a female love interest, the heart is too feeble to deal with this pain of not having this amazing other person around you anymore.

I hope you like this piece!
Looking up at the stars, I know quite well
That, for all they care, I can go to hell,
But on earth indifference is the least
We have to dread from man or beast.
How should we like it were stars to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.
Admirer as I think I am
Of stars that do not give a damn,
I cannot, now I see them, say
I missed one terribly all day.
Were all stars to disappear or die,
I should learn to look at an empty sky
And feel its total dark sublime,
Though this might take me a little time.
