Hello hello!

Welcome back to Today’s Poem. Today I’d like to cover a very special messagethat is close to my heart: Hope.

Hope, is what can uplift or drown a human; and I love it when organizations create a platform that gives people the hope that helps them stay afloat in the ocean of life. You see hope is like a needle in the haystack; it’s easy to lose it and very difficult to find it. But when people come together and support each other the task at hand becomes extremely easy.

A lot of people regard hope as the light at the end of the tunnel. But for me, Hope is the courage and ability to ensure that the light at the end of the tunnel is not another train coming towards you. As Jonas Salk says, “Hope lies in dreams, in imagination, and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality.” Now you might be wondering why I suddenly am talking about hope. Well, its to celebrate 10 Stitch and YouthAid Foundation that are giving a platform to women from grassroot communities of a small area in the city of Pune, India. These women started with stitching masks during the COVID-19 outbreak and have now moved to create 10 Stitch a business to upcycle old clothes.

Just last night these women took to stage to display their amazing clothing line and the visuals are no less than awe inspiring. Here's a few glimpses.

It is when I hear stories and platforms like these that my faith in humanity and in the fact that hard work opens new doors is restored. It’s so humbling to see that women from modest means did not give up and are now at a crossroad where there is no looking back. In honor of these amazing individuals, I bring to you another classic piece from Mary Angelou - “Still I Rise”

You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt

But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?

Why are you beset with gloom?

’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells

Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,

With the certainty of tides,

Just like hopes springing high,

Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?

Bowed head and lowered eyes?

Shoulders falling down like teardrops,

Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?

Don't you take it awful hard

’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines

Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,

You may cut me with your eyes,

You may kill me with your hatefulness,

But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?

Does it come as a surprise

That I dance like I've got diamonds

At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame

I rise

Up from a past that’s rooted in pain

I rise

I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,

Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

I rise

Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear

I rise

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

I am the dream and the hope of the slave.

I rise

I rise

I rise.
